Casa Morada Private Island

Besides the luscious suites, Casa Morada guests spend most of their time at the private island (aka Pool Island). A scenic pedestrian bridge connects the property to Pool Island, which includes a freshwater pool, plenty of comfortable lounge chairs and seating areas, and a double hammock.

The Pool Island bar building is typically staffed from noon until sunset, by a bartender offering beer, wine, and cocktails. The building also has a telescope, binoculars, and travel and local history books.

Next to the building, look for a ladder leading to the water. Enjoy a refreshing ocean swim and then shower off next to the pool and relax on your Pool Island comfy chair.

McCool Travel note: Be sure to redeem your drink coupons, issued at checkin from the office, at the Pool Island bar. Each is valid for a complimentary beer or wine.

Spectacular Sunsets at Casa Morada

Experiencing the amazing Florida Keys sunsets is one of the most beautiful and memorable activities at Casa Morada. Grab the daily drink special from the Pool Island bar and savor another spectacular Gulf Coast sunset.

McCool Travel tip: Visit Pool Island in the middle of the night for star watching. With minimal light noise here you may see more stars than you ever have anywhere else. Use the telescope and binoculars to zoom in on the moon, planets, and star clusters.

Breakfast at Casa Morada

At many resorts, breakfast is underwhelming and an afterthought. Breakfast at Casa Morada is wonderful and one of our favorite aspects of staying at the property. Casa Morada breakfast is serve yourself, unless you opt for the room delivery service ($5 feee per person).

In addition to beverages (tea, coffee, tasty orange juice), breakfast items include hard boiled eggs, fresh fruit, whole bananas, and croissants, pastries, and superb bagels. It is a simple, elegant, and nourishing way to start the day.

Lush Casa Morada Landscaping

The Casa Morada property is a beautiful and tranquil tropical oasis just a block away from the Islamorada commercial hubbub. During your Casa Morada visit, be sure to allow time to explore the grounds and enjoy the phenomenal orchids.

Two main paths extend from Garden House to Seaview House but also explore the smaller paths. One such smaller path leads to a gorgeous zen pond.

Under the chickee hut is a fantastic spot to sip your morning tea/coffee or read a thrilling novel any time of the day. Try the adjacent bocce court on your way to or from Pool Island or breakfast.

We kayaked toward Lorelei and checked out the vibrant crowd and a band from the water. Crossing the channel we found some great mangrove tunnel scenes.

On the way back to the boat launch, I saw a croc in the water. Knowing that this is the only area in the world where alligators and crocodiles live in the same habitat, I thought it was a croc but might be a gator. Captain Bill confirmed that I saw Snappy the Croc. So, be on the lookout for Snappy!

Yoga at Casa Morada

Complimentary yoga sessions are available for guests Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings at 9am. The popular vinyasa flow classes are led by a local, experienced, certified yoga instructor.

Casa Morada Boat Tours

Group and private sailing excursions are available from the small marina next to Pool Island. It is really convenient to not have to drive anywhere and fight traffic and parking.

The Casa Morada fleet has three vessels operated by Master Captain Bill. Blue Mist is a historic sailing yacht that make sunset cocktail cruises elegant and special. Sol Sister is a custom-made sailboat that can take six passengers. Gypsy Soul is a small motor boat, ideal for eco-tours of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

Things to Do Near Casa Morada

The best nearby Florida Keys beach is Founders Park, about five miles north.

For groceries, snacks, and beer/wine, head a mile north of Casa Morada to Publix.

Many visitors come to Islamorada for sport fishing. Several fishing charters are located within a few miles of Casa Morada and the Islamorada Fishing Club is a short walk away, just before Lorelei Restaurant.

Several amazing Islamorada restaurants are within a short distance of Casa Morada. Many are a short walk away but also remember to use the convenient Casa Morada bicycles—walking and bicycling are sometimes quicker than driving!

Speaking of Lorelei, it is one of the most popular places to visit in Islamorada. Lorelei is busiest around sunset but a local foodie expert told me to try Lorelei for breakfast (on my list for a future visit!).

Islamorada Shrimp Shack is a half-mile walk or bike ride from Casa Morada. Famous (or infamous) because of a culinary celeb endorsement, Shrimp Shack is nonetheless still a local favorite with excellent fresh seafood items and great happy hour drink specials.

Morada Bay Cafe is just under a mile and is a phenomenal sunset spot. With many tables in the sand, Morada Bay Cafe is a favorite place to eat in Florida on the water. This is a perfect setting for expertly prepared local seafood (we had Key West pinks, wahoo, and yellowtail snapper), one of the best key lime pie varieties in the Keys, and tasty drinks. See also some photos from our recent visit.

Lazy Days is 2.5 miles away (drive or boat to this one!) and is at the southern end of the island. This might be our favorite Florida waterfront restaurant—with tables in the sand and serving the freshest and tastiest seafood in the Florida Keys.

To sample several local favorite Islamorada restaurants, book a food tour with Florida Keys Food Tours (website). They offer food, happy hour, sunset, and golf cart tours—all include amazing Islamorada food stops. Tell Craig that US Gulf Coast / McCool Travel sent you.

Definitely visit the two nearby craft breweries. Florida Keys Brewing is less than one mile away, at the beginning of the cool Morada Arts District. Pair their iconic Iguana Bait beer with tacos from the onsite food truck. Islamorada Brewery and Distillery is even closer. In addition to craft beer, sample their rum, gin, and vodka. One of the best Florida Keys food deals is a side order of onion rings from their food truck.

Day Trips From Casa Morada

For day trip excursions from Islamorada, try Sombrero Beach (best beach in the Florida Keys!) and Turtle Hospital in Marathon, and further south mangrove tunnel kayaking and other Key West favorites.

See our Florida Keys suggestions, including Seven Mile Bridge, where to see Key deer, where to find excellent key lime pie, and more.
